American Idol Blog

by Mark Oehler
Does this man look angry?

Mark Stanek, The Angry Man

The talent of the contestants each year on American Idol always amazing me. Needless to say, I’m a fan. I recently found a blog that is pretty good. If you’re an American Idol fan, you may want to follow it. He picked nine of the top ten contestants when they were paring them down from 24. Pretty good. He has some pretty funny, present accurate insights. I recommend American Idol fans check it out.

I’d love to hear your comments if you check it out.

Peyton, 8 Days Old

by Mark Oehler

I has honored to shoot Peyton’s photos when he was just eight days old. He was a little cranky about the cold studio, but he was still a wonderful subject. I hope you enjoy. Feel free to leave a comment.

Brazilian Photographer Living in Finland

by Mark Oehler

There is a photographer that I have been following for about a year. She is just starting out and it has been interesting to watch her develop (pun intended) her photographic style. I had been following her on flickr.com, but now she has her own website. If you interested in seeing nice photos taken in a beautiful part of the world, you should check out Cristina’s site.

Iowa Speed Skating

by Mark Oehler

I was invited out to the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena to check out the speed skaters that practice. It took me a year and I’m really disappointed that it did, because it was amazing. The speed skating club is in the only one in Iowa. The two guys that really got it going (Brian and Bill) are shown to the left. They also have several kids in the club. The kids are as young as 6.

I got out there and there were several of the kids already on the ice. I didn’t really realize how fast they can go. I would change position between the middle of the ice and the outside edge.

I would really have to move because the kids could make it around the track in 20-25 seconds and the adults in less than 12. When trying not to fall, I don’t move that fast. It was like playing Frogger on ice.

If you’d like to know more about speed skating in Iowa, check out their website.

New Product Offer, Float Wraps

by Mark Oehler

Float WrapI’m trying a new product out for photos called float wraps. If you’re looking for a way to literally make your photos pop off your walls, this is it. The padding mounting add more dimension to your image. But there is also a raised mount on the back of the image to make it stand off the wall for a very modern, designer feel. With two different standout sizes, you can get that designer look to give your wall collages a little oomph.

Because it is a new product offering for me, I’m offering it at a discount right now when added to your order. This deal won’t last long. Call now to get your session booked and get those orders in.

Sucker for Black and White

by Mark Oehler

It’s true. I’m a sucker for good black and white photography. I think it goes back to high school when I took my first photography class. I was a little freaked out the teacher started talking about rolling film and having to transferring it from the canister to the developing spool. The first time I saw that image appear magically onto the paper in the developer, I was captivated.

I found a interesting gallery recently with some black and white photography from Florida. If you have some time, you should check it out. The artist is Heather Allen from the keys of Florida. One of my favorites in the gallery is a dew-covered flower. Heather’s gallery doesn’t allow display of the photos on other sites, but you can see it here.

It has inspired me enough to start putting more of my black and whites into my online gallery. The photo featured here is a photo of some grass I took in a local field. I just love the tones and detail in the fine little hairs.

Rock the Dress

by Mark Oehler

Even though I don’t shoot a lot of weddings, I can appreciate great wedding photography. I came across a Rock the Dress post on another blog and the images are great. The blog is maintained by Laura Olson. To make it even better, Laura provided an Animoto video, too. I did a little more poking around and she has a SmugMug gallery with some really great background images that are killer.
